Assignment #1

My favourite short from Love Death and Robots was the season 1 episode "Three Robots". This episode had a lighter tone than previous shorts, with the three main characters being easily likable and quick witted. The robots are a part of technology I was impressed with, since we have models resembling the characters, like Alexa, who can converse and make jokes. I appreciated the irony of the robots going on this vacation to try and figure out how humans work, considering the fact we spend so much time today trying to figure out how to better work robots. When they first stop at the abandoned high school, I thought it could be a nod to high schools during COVID where they became empty and 'run down' since everyone was online (the episode was made in 2019 though). Their confusion to understand how the basketball was fun was entertaining, and also highlighted the juxtaposition between advanced technology and the simplicity of everyday objects.

I also really liked the part of the episode when they went to the diner and talked about how humans digested food, which led to them questions how humans were even created in the first place. I thought that was one of the best parts of the episode, because the robots ultimately decide that humans were just made out of dust by a random God. That made me think about how even though humans have constantly progressed and made massive technological advancements, we still find ourselves trying to answer the same questions. It would also be a crime to write about this episode and not mention the cats, which set a playful tone and added comic relief.

Finally, it was interesting that humans had actually gone extinct from their own doing, which I think was a reflection on the future of mankind and a nod to our refusal to accept and address climate change. While the overall episode has a humourous tone, the theme points towards the paradox of the hysteria towards robots destroying the world when humans are doing a perfectly good job of that themselves.

  1. I liked this episode a lot too! I like the irony of the robots calling humans oblivious and simple, even though humans were responsible for the robots' own creation. Humans were able to create robots/species (cats!) that would eventually outlast their own race, but could not prevent their own demise.

  2. I agree this short was definitely amusing seeing how the robots spoke about humans and at the same time frightening and eye opening to see how humans put their needs and wants first completely ignoring issues that could've been resolved. Also, I liked how you proposed the idea of the schools resembling what schools looked like during the pandemic lockdown period.

  3. Three Robots: EXCELLENT COMMENTS: do a bit of research on the author of the script, and the directors, you may find useful info to expand your analysis.
